Gut health plays a crucial role in maintaining overall well-being, affecting everything from digestion to immunity and even mental health. A popular home method that has gained attention for assessing stomach acid levels is the "One-Minute Gut Health Test."
The test, suggested by biohacker Tanya Malik Chawla, involves consuming baking soda mixed with water on an empty stomach. When baking soda interacts with stomach acid, it produces carbon dioxide, which causes burping. The time it takes for you to burp is said to indicate your stomach acid production. A quick burp could mean high stomach acid, while a delayed or absent burp may point to low stomach acid levels.
This method has sparked significant curiosity on social media, but experts caution that it isn't a widely accepted diagnostic tool. Meenu Balaji, Chief Nutritionist at Pragmatic Nutrition, explains that stomach acid production fluctuates throughout the day and varies from person to person, making it challenging to assess using this test alone. In some cases, people with digestive issues might burp even before eating, making the results unreliable.
For a more accurate diagnosis, medical professionals recommend consulting a doctor. Tests like the Heidelberg pH test are far more reliable for assessing stomach acid levels. While the one-minute test may be a fun and simple experiment, it's not a substitute for proper medical advice. So, if you're concerned about your gut health, it's always best to seek expert guidance.
