On June 1, 2025, climate activist Greta Thunberg embarked on a humanitarian voyage to Gaza aboard the vessel Madleen, departing from Catania, Italy. The mission, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, aims to deliver essential aid and challenge Israel's blockade of the region. Thunberg is accompanied by 11 other activists, including actor Liam Cunningham and French MEP Rima Hassan.
At a press conference prior to departure, Thunberg emphasized the moral imperative of the mission, stating, "We have to keep trying... The moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity." She described the situation in Gaza as a "live-streamed genocide," highlighting the urgency of international intervention.
This voyage follows a previous attempt in May, which was thwarted when another vessel in the flotilla was reportedly targeted by drones near Maltese waters. The current mission plans a seven-day journey, contingent on not being intercepted.
Thunberg's participation has drawn both support and criticism. U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham mocked the endeavor, while others have lauded the activists' commitment to humanitarian principles.
