While travelling by train, you've probably noticed that some trains have blue coaches and others red ones. These colors actually indicate two different types of train coaches—ICF (Integral Coach Factory) and LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch), respectively.
Blue coaches are ICF, first manufactured in Chennai, with a lifespan of 25 years. They use air brakes and are common in express and passenger trains, operating at speeds of up to 110 kmph. However, they are less safe in collisions due to outdated design.
On the other hand, red coaches are LHB, introduced in the early 2000s, mostly manufactured in Kapurthala, Punjab. These coaches are anti-telescopic, meaning they don’t crumple or pile up during accidents, making them safer.
They're used in premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi, and support speeds up to 200 kmph.
Indian Railways is gradually replacing blue coaches with red ones for better safety and comfort.
