India is bracing for a nationwide Bharat Bandh on Wednesday, with an estimated participation of over 25 crore workers from various sectors. The strike, called by a joint platform of central trade unions, is a protest against the Centre’s labour and economic policies, which the unions allege are anti-worker and anti-people.
The strike is expected to see participation from sectors including banking, transport, health, education, and various public services. Essential services may also be impacted in some areas as government employees and public sector workers have expressed solidarity.
The trade unions are opposing the alleged privatisation of public sector units, the new labour codes, and the rising cost of living. They are demanding minimum wage protections, secure employment, rollback of the National Monetisation Pipeline, and social security for all workers.
States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Punjab may witness significant disruptions, while in others, the impact could vary depending on local union support.
Authorities have ramped up security across cities, and advisories have been issued in several states. Commuters and the general public are advised to plan accordingly as roadblocks, delays, and closures could occur throughout the day.
