After a disappointing run in England with just 131 runs at sub-22 average over three Tests - Karun Nair may be replaced at No. 3 for the crucial upcoming match in Manchester, starting July 23. India’s assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, said the team appreciates Nair’s rhythm and temperament but “want more runs from the three,” suggesting selectors may opt for a fitter alternative .
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta reinforced this view, recommending rookie B Sai Sudharsan for the final two Tests to infuse fresh momentum in the middle order . Sudharsan, only 23, debuted in Leeds and showed potential, although he was dropped in favor of All‑rounder Washington Sundar.
Meanwhile, cricketing veteran Anil Kumble advised against making sweeping changes, defending Nair by noting he “did enough” and deserves another opportunity . The conflicting viewpoints now leave the management with a balance to strike between experience and form - especially as India trails 1–2 in this pivotal five-match series.
With Manchester looming, the No. 3 spot has become a battleground of strategy, youth, and urgent performance.
