In the heart of Panjim, Goa's capital, stands the Praça do Comércio, an often-overlooked Art Deco landmark that reflects the city's rich architectural heritage. Situated across from the iconic Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, this structure was designed in the 1930s by engineer Luís Bismarck Dias. Its design draws inspiration from ancient Mesopotamian architecture, featuring a ziggurat-like silhouette atop a commercial arcade.
The building showcases quintessential Art Deco elements: flame torch motifs in stucco, sunburst wooden grills, and chevron patterns symbolizing water and waves. Originally envisioned as a commercial hub, many of its shopfronts have been replaced over time, and some remain shuttered. Despite its historical significance, the Praça do Comércio faces an uncertain future, with concerns about neglect and potential redevelopment threatening its preservation.
This structure is a testament to Panjim's architectural diversity, blending regional influences with modernist design. However, as urban development accelerates, such heritage buildings risk being overshadowed. Advocates for conservation urge for increased awareness and protective measures to ensure that the Praça do Comércio and similar landmarks are preserved for future generations.
