Jamdani is a beautiful and ancient hand-weaving style that started in Dhaka, now in Bangladesh. The word "Jamdani" comes from two Persian words-jam means flower and dani means a container-because the fabric usually has floral designs.
In 2013, Jamdani was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and in 2016, it got a GI (Geographical Indication) tag, which protects its identity.
Jamdani is not made by machines. Instead, it’s woven by hand using a special technique where designs are added thread by thread. One saree can take 6 months to 3 years to make, and two weavers work for 10 hours a day on it. That’s why each Jamdani saree is very precious.
Earlier, Jamdani was woven on fine cotton muslin, but now it’s also made in silk and used in clothing and home décor.
Though it began in Dhaka, today Jamdani is also made in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Jamdani is not just a saree-it’s a work of art passed down for generations.
