The Congress party has called into question the depth of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s publicly touted friendship with former US President Donald Trump, calling it "hollow", particularly in light of India’s recent diplomatic setbacks. This critique comes amid four major developments over the past two months that, Congress alleges, expose the failure of Indian diplomacy.
Congress general secretary for communications, Jairam Ramesh, pointed out that since May 10, 2025, Trump has publicly claimed 25 times to have personally intervened to halt Operation Sindoor, using threats to block trade deals with India and Pakistan. He called this a clear indication of waning Indian leverage.
Ramesh also drew attention to a June White House luncheon where Trump met Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir, despite Munir having made inflammatory remarks earlier that year. He noted that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Pakistan’s Deputy PM Ishaq Dar and praised Pakistan’s role in counter-terrorism, further suggesting a US tilt toward Islamabad.
These events prompted Congress to call for a full parliamentary debate and an all-party meeting to review foreign-policy failures, arguing that Modi’s celebrated rapport with Trump has failed to deliver strategic outcomes for India.
