In a deeply tragic incident, Dr. Omkar Kavitke, a doctor at Mumbai’s JJ Hospital, died by suicide on July 7 after reportedly jumping off a bridge shortly after speaking to his mother. According to reports, Dr. Kavitke left the hospital in his car and called his mother, assuring her he’d be home for dinner.
Soon after, he abandoned his vehicle and took the extreme step, leaving both his family and colleagues in shock. Friends and hospital staff described him as a dedicated professional, with no visible signs of distress.
While investigations are ongoing, the suddenness of the act has once again drawn attention to the mental health crisis among medical professionals in India. Long hours, emotional burnout, and lack of support often leave doctors vulnerable, yet their struggles remain largely invisible.
Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and Dr. Kavitke’s phone records, while grief counseling has been offered to his family and colleagues.
