Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has once again triggered a national conversation by advocating a 72-hour workweek for young Indians. Referring to China’s once-popular “9-9-6” work culture — working 9am to 9pm, six days a week — he argued that India must adopt a similar mindset to accelerate economic growth and global competitiveness. According to Murthy, long hours are essential for building discipline, innovation, and a stronger national work ethic.
However, his remarks have drawn sharp criticism across social media, corporate circles, and labour experts. Critics highlight that China’s 9-9-6 model has been officially declared illegal due to high burnout rates, health risks, and employee exploitation concerns. They argue that productivity depends on better working conditions, automation, and skill development — not simply longer hours.
Supporters, including some industry leaders, contend that Murthy’s advice targets entrepreneurs, founders, and early-stage professionals who voluntarily push themselves, not the average worker. They describe his comments as a call for stronger commitment during India’s economic transition.
The debate underscores deeper questions: Should India prioritise longer work hours or smarter productivity? Could such expectations widen social inequities, or are they necessary for the country’s growth ambitions? Murthy’s statement has revived a complex conversation with no easy answers.
