A Nepali undergraduate student was found dead in her hostel room at Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) on Thursday evening, marking the second such tragic case in under three months. The deceased, a computer science student from Birgunj, Nepal, is suspected to have died by suicide, though the circumstances remain unclear, according to Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner S Devdutt Singh.
This incident echoes a similar tragedy earlier this year when another 20-year-old Nepali student allegedly took her life after facing blackmail and racial harassment. That case ignited controversy after KIIT authorities reportedly mishandled the situation, including expelling over 1,000 Nepali students, prompting intervention from India's external affairs ministry.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) later held the university responsible, citing violations of the victim's dignity and rights. With investigations ongoing and a state-formed high-powered committee yet to submit its report, questions loom over student safety and institutional accountability at KIIT.
