Nepal’s government has announced a sweeping ban on 26 social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube following their failure to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology within a mandated seven-day timeframe. This action follows a Supreme Court order compelling all social networks to comply with domestic regulations regarding licensing, local representation, and grievance handling.
Platforms such as TikTok, Viber, WeTalk, Nimbuzz, and Poppo Live remain operational, having completed the registration process. The government defends the crackdown as essential for curbing misuse of platforms, citing concerns over fake accounts, cybercrime, and threats to social harmony. However, critics particularly digital rights groups warn this move could stifle freedom of expression and serve as a tool for censorship.
Nepal joins a growing list of countries tightening Big Tech regulation. While authorities say the ban protects citizens and enforces accountability, it risks isolating millions of users and disrupting digital communication especially for users and journalists reliant on these platforms for connection and information flow.
