Every year, India struggles with mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. To tackle this, Ahmedabad innovator Prasad Phadke developed the Eco BioTrap (EBT) - a biodegradable, smokeless device that “breaks the chain” of mosquito breeding.
Made from recycled packaging material, natural attractants, and a safe insect growth regulator, the EBT lures female mosquitoes to lay eggs inside. Instead of producing adults, their larvae are destroyed. One unit covers 400 sq. ft., costs about ₹500, and lasts 4–6 weeks - making it cheaper than vapourisers and coils while being safe for the environment.
In Dharavi, Mumbai, more than 3,000 units were deployed monthly, protecting around 80,000 residents. Results showed a sharp fall in mosquito populations without harmful smoke or electricity.
After seven years of research and multiple iterations, the device is now patented in over 50 countries. With support from Rentokil PCI across 21 Indian states, Eco BioTrap is valued at ₹50 crore and is scaling rapidly.
This innovation shows how sustainable solutions can save lives, protect communities, and reduce disease without harming the environment.
