Overnight rain triggers waterlogging chaos in Kolkata!

Kolkata woke up to chaos on Tuesday, July 9, 2025, after heavy overnight rainfall left large parts of the city severely waterlogged. Major neighborhoods, including Dum Dum, Behala, Park Street, and Tollygunge, witnessed knee-deep water, causing massive disruption to daily life.

Public transport was hit hard, with buses, autos, and two-wheelers struggling to move through flooded roads. Office-goers and students were seen wading through waterlogged lanes, while traffic congestion added to the frustration during morning hours. Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials deployed pumps in low-lying zones, but drainage systems were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of water.

The Meteorological Department reported that the city received over 100 mm of rain in less than 12 hours, with more rainfall expected over the next 48 hours. Authorities have advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.

The downpour has once again raised questions about the city’s infrastructure preparedness during monsoon, especially with high tide expected later today, which may further slow drainage efforts.
