OYO's new policy bans unmarried couples from staying at partner hotels.

In a surprising move, OYO, one of India’s top hotel booking platforms, announced a policy change disallowing unmarried couples from checking into its partner hotels in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The decision, effective immediately, aims to address local social concerns and foster responsible hospitality.

According to Pawas Sharma, Region Head of OYO North India, “We are committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices while balancing personal freedoms with community norms.” As per the updated guidelines, married couples must present valid proof of relationship at the time of check-in, even for online bookings.

The policy comes in response to repeated appeals from civil society groups in Meerut, urging stricter measures against stays by unmarried couples. Local residents have raised concerns about perceived moral issues, prompting OYO to pilot the initiative in the city. The company is also considering expanding the policy to other regions based on feedback.

Unmarried couples may face denial of accommodation, with discretion granted to hotel partners. This shift is part of OYO’s broader effort to reposition itself as a trusted platform for families, business travelers, students, pilgrims, and solo adventurers.

In addition to this policy, OYO has launched initiatives nationwide, such as seminars with police and hotel partners on hospitality standards, blacklisting establishments engaged in unethical practices, and cracking down on unauthorized properties misusing its branding.

While some view the move as a step toward aligning with local sentiments, critics argue it may alienate younger customers and undermine OYO’s previously progressive stance on inclusivity. The debate continues as Meerut becomes the testing ground for this contentious policy.
