Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his two‑day state visit to the Maldives and departed for Tamil Nadu on July 26, following his participation in the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
During his visit, Modi was accorded a 21‑gun salute and received a ceremonial welcome at Republic Square in Malé, where he joined President Mohamed Muizzu and dignitaries - including members of the Indian diaspora—who performed dances and chanted “Vande Mataram”.
Modi and Muizzu held bilateral talks, resulting in eight key agreements - covering sectors like digital payments (UPI), fisheries, debt relief, and a ₹4,850 crore line of credit. They also launched formal Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, underlining India’s commitment to regional cooperation.
As Modi took off for India, he expressed gratitude to President Muizzu and the Maldivian people for their hospitality and described the visit as “productive,” indicating fresh momentum in India‑Maldives ties. Future projects and cooperative efforts are expected to follow, reinforcing the countries' strategic partnership in the Indian Ocean region.
