In a rare acknowledgment, Italian luxury fashion house Prada has admitted that its latest sandal designs, showcased at the Men’s Spring/Summer 2026 show, were inspired by India’s traditional Kolhapuri chappals. The minimalist leather sandals - flat-soled with broad straps - instantly reminded many fashion watchers of the centuries-old handcrafted footwear from Maharashtra.
However, Prada was quick to clarify that these sandals are still in the design stage. A company spokesperson noted that none of the pieces seen on the runway are confirmed for commercial release.
The admission comes amid growing calls for fashion giants to credit indigenous crafts and traditional artisans when borrowing from non-Western aesthetics. While Kolhapuri chappals have long been a staple in Indian fashion, their global recognition has been limited - until now.
Indian designers and social media users have praised the visibility but are urging Prada to go a step further and collaborate with Indian artisans to ensure rightful representation and benefit.
