Redefining Electrification: Deep-Tech Startup Vimag Labs Raises $5 Million Led by Accel!

The funding comes as the global electric vehicle (EV) industry faces significant supply chain pressures and price volatility related to rare earth magnets, which are primarily sourced from China. Vimag Labs, co-founded in late 2025 by Manish Seth and Dr. Piyush Desai, offers a high-efficiency alternative that is largely "software-defined."

The Breakthrough Technology:

• Virtual Magnet Architecture: Traditional EV motors rely on heavy, expensive permanent magnets made from rare earth elements like neodymium. Vimag Labs' patented platform uses advanced power electronics and control software to electronically generate magnetic fields inside the motor.

• Performance without Constraints: The company claims its motors deliver the high torque and efficiency of traditional magnet-based motors but at a lower cost, with higher supply chain resilience and better sustainability.

• Plug-and-Play Integration: The solution is designed as a drop-in replacement for existing EV manufacturers, requiring no major structural changes to the vehicle’s drivetrain.

Strategic Roadmap:

• Immediate Focus: Vimag is currently prioritizing the two-wheeler and three-wheeler EV segments in India and Southeast Asia, where electrification is moving most rapidly.

• Broader Applications: Beyond transportation, the technology is being adapted for HVAC systems, industrial machinery, and defense—all sectors where high-efficiency motors are critical.

• Maturity: The technology has reached Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7, with real-world vehicle testing currently underway in collaboration with several major Indian and overseas Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

Investor Perspective:

Barath Subramanian, Partner at Accel, noted that Vimag Labs is addressing a fundamental bottleneck in the energy transition. By creating a "software-defined" motor, the company is not just making a better component but building a new controls platform that can redefine electrification globally.

The capital infusion will allow Vimag to expand its engineering team, scale its manufacturing capabilities, and accelerate its go-to-market execution across multiple industrial sectors.
