Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, is gearing up to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, scheduled to begin on January 13, 2025, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. As a significant gesture of spiritual acceptance, the Niranjani Akhara, a renowned Hindu monastic order, bestowed upon her the name "Kamala," symbolizing a connection with Indian traditions.
Ahead of her participation in the Maha Kumbh, Powell Jobs visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, accompanied by Swami Kailashanand Giri Maharaj of the Niranjani Akhara. Demonstrating respect for temple customs, she offered prayers while observing the sacred Shivling from outside the sanctum sanctorum. Swami Kailashanand described her as “like a daughter,” underscoring the bond formed during her spiritual journey.
During the Maha Kumbh Mela, Powell Jobs is expected to partake in rituals, including a ceremonial dip in the Ganga River, an act believed to cleanse sins and foster spiritual renewal. Her participation signifies a growing global interest in India's cultural and spiritual heritage, drawing attention to the universal appeal of Sanatan Dharma.
The Niranjani Akhara also made headlines by appointing Maharshi Vyasanand, an American disciple, as its new Mahamandaleshwar, marking another step toward international inclusivity in Hindu practices.
Powell Jobs' visit highlights the increasing global resonance of India's ancient traditions, showcasing the Maha Kumbh Mela as a bridge between cultures and faiths.
