Surveillance or Convenience? Microsoft Teams to Share Your "Work Location" with Employers!

A controversial shift in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. The new feature automatically updates your "Work Location" status in Teams and Outlook based on the specific BSSID (Wi-Fi access point) your device connects to.

Key Features of the Update:

• Automated Detection: When a user connects to a designated "office" network, Teams will automatically toggle their status to "In the Office." If the user is on a home or public network, it may revert to "Remote."

• Manager Visibility: This status is visible across the organization's directory, allowing managers to see at a glance who is physically present in the building versus working from elsewhere.

• The "Opt-Out" Debate: Early reports suggested this might be mandatory, but amid backlash, Microsoft clarified that while the feature may be enabled by default for organizations, individual users should have the ability to manage their settings. However, Doffman warns that "organizational pressure" may make opting out difficult for many.

The Controversy:

• End of "Quiet Quitting" and "Coffee Badging": The update targets "coffee badging"—the practice of swiping into the office briefly to show presence and then leaving to work from home. With live Wi-Fi tracking, "faking" office attendance becomes significantly more difficult.

• Privacy Creep: Critics argue that once location tracking is normalized for the office, it is a small step toward tracking employees' precise movements within the building or monitoring their arrival and departure times with second-by-second accuracy.

• Trust vs. Data: The report highlights a growing "trust deficit" in corporate culture. While Microsoft argues the tool helps colleagues find each other for face-to-face meetings, employees view it as a "digital leash" designed to enforce rigid Return-to-Office (RTO) mandates.

Timeline:

The rollout is expected to hit most global tenants by February 2026. IT administrators will have the first opportunity to configure these settings, and employees are advised to check their Teams > Settings > Privacy tab once the update goes live to see how their data is being shared.
