Fast fashion, which focuses on rapid production of trendy, low-cost garments, has led to excessive consumption and disposal of clothing. The demand for cheap and easily replaceable outfits encourages a culture of waste, with synthetic fabrics taking decades to decompose. Many of these discarded clothes end up in rivers and oceans, further worsening pollution.
To counteract these issues, experts are advocating for a shift towards slow fashion and circular economy models. Slow fashion promotes quality over quantity, encouraging consumers to invest in durable, timeless pieces rather than frequently purchasing disposable clothing. A circular economy, on the other hand, focuses on recycling and repurposing textile waste, reducing the environmental footprint of the fashion industry.
Efforts to tackle textile waste are gaining momentum in India. Some initiatives aim to improve waste management by introducing better collection and recycling systems for old clothes. Additionally, awareness campaigns are being launched to educate consumers about the impact of fast fashion and the benefits of sustainable choices.
As the country grapples with the consequences of textile pollution, industry leaders and policymakers are urging the adoption of greener practices. The future of India's fashion sector depends on responsible production and consumption, ensuring that style does not come at the cost of environmental destruction.
