In a recent episode of the podcast "What the Hell Navya," veteran actress Jaya Bachchan and her daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda, shared their preference for using rock salt as a natural skin exfoliant. Jaya Bachchan revealed her routine of rubbing salt on her body to exfoliate and remove bumps, a practice she finds beneficial for skin health. Shweta Bachchan Nanda echoed this sentiment, noting that she applies rock salt after bathing, stating, "It's very good for aura cleaning." 

The Bachchans advocate that using rock salt scrubs can help remove dead skin cells, improve circulation, and detoxify the skin. The minerals present in rock salt, such as magnesium and potassium, are believed to nourish the skin, leaving it smooth and revitalized. 

However, dermatologists advise caution with this practice. Dr. Shareefa Chause, a dermatologist at Dr. Shareefa Skincare Clinic in Mumbai, acknowledges that while rock salt can exfoliate dead skin and improve circulation, its coarse texture may be too abrasive for some individuals. Overuse can lead to skin irritation, micro-tears, dryness, and increased sensitivity.

Dr. Chause warns that applying rock salt to inflamed skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea can exacerbate irritation and redness. She recommends that individuals with extremely dry or sensitive skin, or those with existing skin conditions, avoid using rock salt scrubs directly on the skin. 

In addition to rock salt scrubs, the Bachchan family incorporates mustard oil into their skincare regimen. Shweta Bachchan Nanda has highlighted that her parents, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, have maintained good skin by using mustard oil. Jaya Bachchan, being Bengali, uses mustard oil in cooking, while Amitabh Bachchan applies it directly to his skin. Shweta notes, "They have never touched their faces [with cosmetic treatments], and I think for 81 and 76, they have very good skin."
