On June 26, in the Hoogyam range of Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, forest staff discovered the carcasses of an estimated 8‑year‑old tigress and her four cubs, aged between 10 months and two years . Officials suspect the animals died after feeding on a cow carcass that locals may have laced with poison - possibly to deter the tigress after it preyed on livestock .
A six‑member special investigation team led by Additional PCCF B.P. Ravi, including veterinary experts and NTCA representatives, has been formed. The team has collected tissue and stomach samples for forensic and toxicological analysis, with a report expected within three days . Meanwhile, two men have been arrested and four others detained in connection with the case.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre condemned the tragedy as unnatural and vowed strict action if poisoning is confirmed. He also pledged to enhance patrolling in the 906 km² sanctuary - home to over 560 tigers - to prevent future incidents .
