A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck off the coast of Crete in Greece, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences. The quake occurred at a depth of 77 kilometers beneath the surface. Following the seismic event, authorities have launched a tsunami risk evaluation for the region.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has confirmed that the tremor has raised concerns due to its proximity to the coastline. They noted that depending on the distance between the epicenter and the coast, tsunamis can be local within 100 kilometers regional within 1000 kilometers or even distant over 1000 kilometers.
Emergency services in Greece are closely monitoring the situation while residents near the coastal areas have been advised to stay alert. This incident adds to the series of seismic activities frequently recorded in the Mediterranean zone.
This is a developing story and further updates are awaited.
