UIDAI tightens Aadhaar rules. Stricter Aadhaar rules in Assam, Manipur

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced stricter protocols for adult Aadhaar enrolment and updates, tightening what was once a relatively relaxed identity process. Going forward, adults applying for Aadhaar must present updated government documents—such as passport, PAN card, ration card, or birth/matriculation certificates—for cross-verification against central databases.

These new measures aim to prevent misuse of Aadhaar by unauthorised individuals and enhance the system’s overall integrity and reliability. Additionally, UIDAI clarified that only one Aadhaar number per individual (with biometric data) will be valid, eliminating issues of multiple registrations.

In certain states like Assam and Manipur, authorities have rolled out region-specific scrutiny: Assam will mandate Aadhaar issuance to adults only through District Commissioners, bypassing common service centres, to curb illegal immigration via fraudulent registrations. In Manipur, adult Aadhaar applications are now mandatorily reviewed and approved at state headquarters, enforced by the office of the Special Secretary (Home), with periodic biometric updates for minors and adolescents to enhance data accuracy.
