Just days after suspending key military aid, President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would resume sending defensive weapons to Ukraine, citing the intensifying Russian drone and missile campaign that has resulted in civilian deaths and wounded dozens. Trump stressed that Ukraine “had to be able to defend themselves,” as the Pentagon confirmed shipments will restart immediately.
The initial pause, ordered by the Pentagon under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, stemmed from concerns over dwindling U.S. stockpiles of air-defense systems, Patriot interceptors, Stinger missiles, AIM munitions, and rocket artillery rounds. However, Russia has seized the opportunity—deploying high-volume drone and missile strikes that killed at least 11 civilians and wounded over 80 in one day, including attacks in Kyiv and Kharkiv.
In conjunction with Trump’s policy reversal, Kyiv has sought new arms deals with European firms to bolster drone production and other capabilities. And while U.S. defense stockpiles remain under strain, the Pentagon is resuming deliveries to ensure air defenses remain operational amid ongoing peace efforts.
