Walmart has struck a new partnership with OpenAI to let shoppers and Sam’s Club members buy products directly within ChatGPT using its Instant Checkout feature.
The initiative is part of Walmart’s broader AI strategy to shift from traditional search-based e-commerce into a more proactive, conversational model—what the company calls “agentic commerce.” Under the collaboration, users can ask ChatGPT to help plan meals, restock essentials, or discover new products, and then complete checkout directly in the chat.
Walmart says the move will make shopping more personalized, contextual, and frictionless, a departure from list-based search results. It also signals Walmart’s ongoing push to embed AI across operations—including fashion production, customer service, and internal training.
The market reacted positively: Walmart’s shares rose ~3% following the announcement.
This partnership places Walmart at the forefront of a wave of retailers experimenting with AI-enabled commerce, such as OpenAI’s recent deals with Etsy and Shopify.
