Zoho has launched Arattai, a free messaging and calling app aimed at being an Indian alternative to WhatsApp. Designed to work smoothly even on low-end smartphones and slower networks, Arattai promises a seamless messaging experience for users across India.
The app supports voice and text messaging, along with the ability to share documents, images, and make audio or video calls. One of its standout features is the ability to host group chats with up to 1,000 participants, far surpassing standard WhatsApp group limits. Arattai also introduces dedicated channels, which allow larger communities or organisations to communicate in a more structured and organised manner.
The name “Arattai” means “casual conversation” in Tamil, reflecting the app’s focus on simplicity and informal communication. Zoho aims to provide an efficient, secure, and user-friendly platform for individuals, businesses, and communities looking for a homegrown messaging solution.
By addressing limitations in current apps and catering to Indian users’ needs, Arattai hopes to capture a significant portion of the messaging market while promoting data privacy and local innovation.
