In a heartwarming act of maternal courage, a mother from Kerala donated a portion of her liver to save her nine-month-old baby suffering from a critical liver condition. The complex liver transplant surgery was successfully performed at Rajagiri Hospital near Aluva, according to a hospital statement.
The infant had been diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare and life-threatening condition where the bile ducts are blocked or absent, causing severe liver damage. With the baby’s health rapidly deteriorating, doctors recommended an urgent living donor liver transplant.
The mother was found to be a compatible donor and bravely chose to undergo the risky procedure to give her child a second chance at life. A team of surgeons carried out the transplant successfully, and both the mother and child are now reported to be stable and recovering well.
The story has moved many on social media, celebrating the mother's love and the expertise of Kerala’s growing transplant capabilities.
