Gold has long been a staple investment in India, regarded as a symbol of wealth and security. Many Indian travelers take advantage of Dubai's lower gold prices, bringing the precious metal back to India.
Apart from its financial value, gold is also integral to Indian culture, especially for weddings, which keeps demand high year-round. But how much gold can Indians legally bring back from Dubai?
According to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Indian travelers can bring up to 1 kg of gold (in the form of coins and bars) from Dubai, provided they have stayed there for over six months. However, any gold exceeding the allowable limit must be declared at customs.
For duty-free gold, men can carry up to 20 grams of gold worth up to ₹50,000, while women can bring up to 40 grams, valued at ₹1 lakh, as jewelry or bars for personal use. Children under 15 years can bring up to 40 grams of gold as ornaments or gifts, with proper identity proof.
If travelers exceed the limit, customs duties apply: 3% for gold between 20-50 grams, 6% for 50-100 grams, and 10% for anything beyond 100 grams.
So, the next time you're traveling to Dubai, make sure to check these limits to avoid unexpected charges!
