India is gearing up to launch its very own generative AI model, a move that promises to reshape the country's digital future. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled this ambitious initiative during the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave on January 30, 2025.
Powered by the newly established India AI Compute Facility, this project will utilize a staggering 18,693 GPUs to create a Large Language Model (LLM) tailored specifically for Indian users.
What sets this initiative apart? The focus is on developing AI models that resonate with India's diverse linguistic and cultural fabric.
By addressing local nuances and biases, these models will ensure relevance and accessibility for all citizens. The government aims to have foundational models ready within six to eight months, with some optimistic projections suggesting a quicker turnaround of just four to six months.
Moreover, the initiative opens doors for startups and researchers, inviting proposals to collaborate on this groundbreaking technology. With a 40% subsidy on GPU access, aspiring innovators will find it easier to contribute to this transformative project.
To ensure responsible development, an AI Safety Institute will also be established, emphasizing ethical practices in AI deployment. As India steps onto the global stage alongside tech giants like OpenAI and China's DeepSeek, this generative AI model represents not just technological advancement but a commitment to harnessing AI for the greater good of society.
The future looks bright as India embarks on this thrilling journey into the realm of artificial intelligence!
