In the dense forests of Northeast India, a quiet revolution is taking place - one led not by activists or officials, but by young filmmakers with cameras. Through the GreenHub Fellowship, local youth are documenting their native lands, wildlife, and community-led conservation stories - turning visual storytelling into a powerful weapon to protect nature.
Founded in 2014 by environmental filmmaker Rita Banerji, GreenHub trains young people from remote tribal areas in filming, editing, and conservation storytelling. These fellows, many from marginalized communities, use cameras to narrate the struggles and triumphs of their forests - from Assam’s golden langur protection drives to Nagaland’s eco-restoration projects.
The initiative has transformed lives - former hunters have become environmental advocates, villages are restoring lost biodiversity, and traditional knowledge is being preserved on film. Their documentaries have inspired eco-tourism, awareness campaigns, and even policy support.
For these youth, a camera is more than a tool - it’s a voice for their forests. As Rita says, “To rewild the world, one must first rewild the imagination.”
