YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit filed by former U.S. President Donald Trump over the suspension of his account in 2021 following the Capitol riots. The settlement, filed in court documents on September 29, states that it does not represent an admission of liability by YouTube or its parent company, Google.
Of the total, $22 million will go toward the Trust for the National Mall to support Trump’s planned White House State Ballroom project, while $2.5 million will be distributed among other plaintiffs such as the American Conservative Union and author Naomi Wolf.
Trump’s YouTube account was suspended in January 2021 over concerns about incitement to violence but reinstated in 2023. The settlement makes YouTube the last major platform, after Meta and X, to resolve legal disputes with Trump over his suspensions.
