The Assam government has received approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to develop 10 waterway projects aimed at connecting seven significant temples in the state. The project, which will be implemented under the Sagarmala Scheme with an investment of INR 645.56 crore, is set to enhance river tourism in Assam. The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has already granted approval for the initiative.

The proposed waterways will operate on a "Hop on & Hop off" model, linking key temples along the Brahmaputra River. These temples include:

Kamakhya Temple: An ancient and revered Shakti Peetha dedicated to goddess Kamakhya, known for its unique rituals and the Ambubachi Mela.

Pandunath Temple: Located within Kaziranga National Park, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has ties to the Pandavas from the Mahabharata.

Ashwaklanta Temple: A peaceful temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, believed to have been established by the sage Narada.

Doul Govinda Temple: Located in Tezpur, this Krishna temple is famous for its vibrant Holi festival celebrations.

Umananda Temple: Situated on Peacock Island in the Brahmaputra River, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is accessible by boat and offers scenic views.

Chakreshwar Temple: A tranquil temple in Hajo dedicated to Lord Shiva, known for its serene atmosphere and historical significance.

Auniati Satra Temple: A 17th-century Vaishnavite monastery in Majuli dedicated to Lord Krishna, recognized for its cultural and religious importance.

The waterways project will also include the construction of 12 floating terminals, two multimodal terminals at Pandu and Jogighopa, and two permanent terminals at Bogibeel and Dhubri, further boosting connectivity and tourism in Assam.
