Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has slammed US President Donald Trump's recent remarks on the India-Pakistan ceasefire and Kashmir issue, calling them “deeply disappointing” and damaging to India's diplomatic standing. Tharoor outlined four key concerns, including Trump's creation of a false equivalence between India and Pakistan, offering Pakistan undue negotiation legitimacy, and internationalising the Kashmir issue long held by India as a bilateral matter.
Tharoor warned that Trump's comments risk reversing decades of diplomatic efforts and legitimising terror-linked narratives. “India will never negotiate with a terrorist gun pointed at its head,” he asserted. The Congress MP also criticised the “re-hyphenation” of India and Pakistan in global diplomacy, reminding that US presidents since Clinton have avoided clubbing visits to both nations.
Trump had earlier claimed he used trade leverage to help broker a ceasefire between the two nuclear powers, an assertion India has not officially endorsed.
