The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved major revisions to its playing conditions, effective immediately for Test cricket and from July 2 for ODIs and T20Is, aimed at speeding up play and improving fairness.
Key changes:
-
Stop‑clock in Tests: Fielding teams now have 60 seconds between overs, with two warnings before a five‑run penalty per delay. Warnings reset after every 80 overs.
-
Saliva rule tweak: While saliva remains banned, umpires are no longer forced to change the ball immediately upon spotting saliva. They may only do so if the ball is visibly compromised.
-
DRS updates: Secondary reviews will default to an 'out' decision if the initial on‐field call was out; combined reviews are now chronological; fair catches on no‑balls will be reviewed, with only the no‑ball run awarded if clean .
-
Injury substitutions trial: Domestic first‑class cricket can now allow full‑time, like‑for‑like replacements for obvious injuries.
These standardizations aim to modernize game flow, reduce time-wasting, and uphold competitive integrity across formats.
