A 90-year-old tradition falls! What made Assam end the Namaz break?

In a historic shift, the Assam Legislative Assembly has abolished a 90-year-old tradition that granted a two-hour break on Fridays for Muslim legislators to offer 'namaz'. Implemented in the ongoing budget session, this decision was finalized in August but is now being enforced for the first time.

The move has sparked controversy, with opposition leaders claiming it was imposed by the ruling party's numerical strength. AIUDF MLA Rafiqul Islam voiced strong disapproval, stating that around 30 Muslim MLAs had opposed the move.

Congress Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia suggested arranging an alternative prayer space nearby to ensure that religious obligations do not hinder legislative discussions.

The Rules Committee, chaired by Speaker Biswajit Daimary, justified the decision by emphasizing the secular nature of the Constitution. According to Daimary, legislative proceedings should remain uniform throughout the week without religious considerations affecting schedules.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma supported the decision, calling it a necessary step towards enhancing productivity and shedding remnants of colonial-era practices.

The Friday break had been in place since 1937 under Syed Saadulla of the Muslim League. With its removal, Assam’s legislative landscape undergoes a significant transformation, igniting debates on secularism, governance, and the evolving relationship between faith and state affairs in India. The Assembly’s decision marks a crucial moment in redefining the balance between religious traditions and administrative efficiency.
