Every year, a beautiful event happens on the beaches of Odisha, India. Thousands of Olive Ridley turtles, one of the world's endangered sea turtles, return to the shore for their mass nesting, called "Arribada", which means "arrival" in Spanish.
This year, over 3 lakh (300,000) turtles have come to Rushikulya and Gahirmatha beaches, filling the sandy shores with life. These turtles travel thousands of kilometers across the ocean to lay their eggs on the same beach where they were born.
Each turtle digs a nest in the sand and lays around 100-150 eggs. After about 45-60 days, tiny baby turtles hatch and crawl towards the sea. But their journey is full of dangers, and only a few will survive to become adults.
Sadly, these turtles face many threats like fishing nets, habitat loss, and climate change. To help them, the Odisha government and conservation groups have taken action. They have created protected areas, banned fishing near nesting sites, and started awareness campaigns to save these turtles.
The mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles is not just a beautiful sight; it is a story of hope and survival. Watching thousands of turtles return to their birthplace reminds us how important it is to protect nature. Odisha's beaches are a safe home for these ancient sea travelers, keeping their cycle of life alive for future generations
