Noise-cancelling headphones have become a must-have gadget for many, providing peace in the chaotic world of daily commutes. But recent concerns raised by audiologists suggest that extended use of these headphones may have unintended consequences on auditory processing skills, particularly for adults.
Renee Almeida, an audiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, has noticed a rise in adults coming to her clinic with hearing difficulties, only to find their hearing is normal. The issue lies with their brain not their ears. These individuals often struggle to locate sounds or follow conversations in noisy environments a condition known as auditory processing disorder (APD).
Almeida theorizes that noise-cancelling headphones may contribute to this issue by depriving the brain of multitasking with various sounds. When listening to a single sound source like music or a podcast, the brain may become lazy reducing its ability to differentiate and process background noise effectively. This could make it harder for individuals to understand speech in noisy settings like bars or trains.
While there is no definitive research linking noise-cancelling headphones to APD experts agree that more studies are needed to explore the potential effects especially in young people. In the meantime Almeida suggests alternative options like bone conduction headphones and auditory training exercises to help keep the brain's listening skills sharp.
Ultimately, while noise-cancelling technology offers many benefits, it’s crucial to find a balance to avoid weakening our brain's natural ability to process sounds.
