Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced in a video statement on Monday, April 21, 2025. His passing marks the end of a transformative 12-year papacy characterized by humility, inclusivity, and a commitment to social justice.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Francis was elected pope in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. He chose the name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, reflecting his dedication to the poor and marginalized.
Throughout his papacy, Francis was known for his progressive stance on various issues, including climate change, LGBTQ+ rights, and interfaith dialogue. He emphasized a more compassionate and inclusive Church, famously stating, "Who am I to judge?" in reference to gay individuals.
Despite facing health challenges in recent years, including a bout of double pneumonia earlier this year, Francis continued to fulfill his duties. He delivered his Easter Sunday address just a day before his passing, calling for freedom of thought and tolerance.
The Vatican has announced that the canonization ceremony for Carlo Acutis, who was to become the first saint of the millennial generation, has been postponed due to the pope's death.
The College of Cardinals will convene in the coming weeks to elect a new pope. The conclave, held in the Sistine Chapel, typically begins 15 to 20 days after a pope's death to allow time for mourning and for all cardinals to arrive in Rome.
Pope Francis's legacy as a humble servant and advocate for the marginalized will continue to inspire millions around the world.
