In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, India has taken decisive actions against Pakistan, accusing it of supporting cross-border terrorism. Among the measures, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a pivotal agreement signed in 1960 that governs the sharing of the Indus River system between the two nations. This treaty had withstood multiple conflicts over the decades, making its suspension a significant escalation in India-Pakistan relations.
The Indian government has also downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan, expelling Pakistani military attachés and shutting down the Attari land-transit post. Additionally, India has canceled visas for Pakistani nationals and suspended the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme.
Bhutto, former pakistan foreign minister, speaking in Sukkur alongside the Indus River, said, "India has accused Pakistan of the Pahalgam incident, with Modi making false allegations to conceal his own weaknesses and deceive his people. He has unilaterally decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, under which India had acknowledged that the Indus belongs to Pakistan. Standing here in Sukkur by the Indus, I want to tell India that the Indus is ours and will remain ours. Either water will flow in this Indus, or their blood will."
Pakistan has vehemently denied any involvement in the Pahalgam attack and has warned that any move to divert water meant for it under the Indus Waters Treaty would be considered an "act of war." In retaliation, Pakistan has suspended visas for Indian nationals, closed its airspace to Indian aircraft, and expelled Indian diplomats. The country has also suspended the 1972 Simla Agreement, further straining diplomatic relations.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the Pahalgam attack and emphasized that attacks against civilians are unacceptable under any circumstances.
