Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, cautioned that eating dry chia seeds followed by water can cause the seeds to expand in the esophagus, leading to blockages that may require medical intervention. He emphasized that chia seeds can absorb up to 27 times their weight in water, forming a gel-like consistency that can obstruct the esophagus if not properly hydrated beforehand.
Chia seeds are renowned for their health benefits, including high fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, which aid digestion and promote heart health. However, consuming them dry poses risks. The seeds' ability to absorb significant amounts of water can lead to swelling and blockages in the esophagus, especially if not consumed with adequate liquid.
To safely enjoy chia seeds, it's recommended to soak them in water or add them to moist foods like yogurt, smoothies, or oatmeal. This practice ensures they are fully expanded before consumption, reducing the risk of choking and aiding in digestion.
Individuals with swallowing difficulties or gastrointestinal conditions should exercise caution and consult healthcare providers before incorporating chia seeds into their diets. Proper preparation and moderation are key to harnessing the nutritional benefits of chia seeds without compromising health.
