In a surprising turn of events, Bengaluru has been awarded the title of the 3rd slowest city in the world for commuting, and it’s got many people raising their eyebrows. A recent global report placed India's tech capital behind only Moscow and Bogotá, earning a spot on the global traffic congestion index.
The Stats Are Staggering
According to the report, Bengaluru residents now spend an average of 71 minutes in traffic each day. That’s nearly 1.5 hours of the day wasted in gridlock! Compare this to other major cities like London (56 minutes) or New York (59 minutes), and it's clear that Bengaluru is struggling with its urban mobility.
Why Is Bengaluru So Slow?
There are a few reasons behind the city's traffic woes. First, the rapid population growth has put massive pressure on roads and infrastructure. The city's rapid development in IT and business sectors attracted millions of people, and the infrastructure hasn't quite kept up. Moreover, the lack of public transportation options, poor road maintenance, and regular construction projects contribute to the delays.
What Can Be Done?
To combat this issue, experts suggest improving the public transport network, introducing more bicycle lanes, and focusing on smart city technologies. The question remains: Can Bengaluru reclaim its reputation as a fast-paced, bustling tech hub or will traffic continue to be its biggest hurdle?
