As Indo-Pak tensions spiral following the Pahalgam terror attack and India's fierce response through Operation Sindoor, Meghalaya has swung into action-imposing a strict two-month night curfew near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
Effective from May 8, 2025, the curfew will be enforced daily from 8 PM to 6 AM in the East Khasi Hills district. It covers a 1-kilometre stretch from the Zero Line of the International Border, where illegal activities and movement are rampant.
The District Magistrate, RM Kurbah, issued the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). This move is aimed at curbing cross-border infiltration, smuggling, and maintaining law and order during a period of intense geopolitical uncertainty.
The curfew bans the movement of individuals trying to illegally enter or exit India and prohibits any assembly of five or more people, processions, or possession of potential weapons like sticks, rods, or stones.
Smuggling of cattle, contraband, betel nuts, tea leaves, cigarettes, and more is a growing concern. Authorities are now tightening surveillance to clamp down on these illegal trades.
This comes just days after India demolished nine terror hideouts across Pakistan and PoK. Bangladesh, in response, has urged both nations to seek peace through diplomacy.
With regional volatility at a high, Meghalaya's border crackdown signals India's tightened internal security stance.
