A new proposal has triggered a heated debate in India’s medical education system - should non-MBBS distance Ph.D. degree holders be allowed to teach core subjects in medical colleges? This idea has divided experts, educators, and policymakers across the country.
Supporters of the proposal argue that these educators possess strong academic knowledge and advanced research skills. They believe such teachers can handle theoretical parts of medical education effectively and help fill the shortage of faculty in medical colleges. According to them, having more qualified teachers - even if they are not doctors - can still improve the learning environment.
Opponents, however, strongly disagree. They warn that medical education is incomplete without hands-on patient care experience, something non-MBBS faculty may lack. Critics fear that this move could weaken clinical and ethical standards and leave students less prepared for real-world medical practice. For them, teaching future doctors requires not just academic knowledge but also practical exposure in hospitals.
This debate is not just about teachers - it’s about the future of India’s healthcare system. To address the controversy, The Hindu will host a live webinar titled “Who should teach future doctors? The debate over non-MBBS Ph.D. faculty” on August 16 at 5:00 p.m. The session will feature experts presenting both sides of the argument, aiming to find a balanced solution.
