South Africa’s emphatic 109-run win over Sri Lanka in Gqeberha has brought them within touching distance of their first-ever World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s. One more victory from their two home Tests against Pakistan will confirm their qualification, marking a remarkable turnaround for the Proteas.
At the start of the 2024/25 season, five teams—India, South Africa, Australia, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, struggled for a spot in the WTC final. New Zealand’s elimination after a series defeat to England and Sri Lanka’s slim chances leave South Africa, India, and Australia as the primary contenders for the final two spots.
South Africa’s campaign started poorly, with just one win in five Tests. However, they bounced back with five consecutive victories to top the WTC table at a 63.33 percentage. A clean sweep over Pakistan would solidify their dominance, while even one loss could open opportunities for India and Australia.
Australia, despite dropping to second place, remains in a strong position. If they win two of their three remaining matches against India, their qualification is almost certain, even if they falter against Sri Lanka. However, a series loss to India would make their Sri Lanka matches critical.
India, too, holds its fate. A strong showing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy—winning two matches and drawing one—would likely secure their spot. Conversely, a poor result would force them to rely on favourable outcomes from other teams.
The WTC race has become a thrilling contest, with high stakes for every team. Fans worldwide can look forward to an electrifying end to the season as cricket’s best battle for a shot at glory.
