Degrees Are Dead, Skills Will Survive

In a sharp challenge to traditional education, Nikhil Kamath, co‑founder of Zerodha, declared: “The days of four‑year college courses are over. Lifelong learning is the new norm - for everyone.” Citing the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, he highlighted that by 2030, 34% of workplace tasks will be automated - up from just 22% today.

The report forecasts a major workforce transformation: 92 million jobs are expected to vanish, while 170 million new roles will emerge by 2030 - yielding a net growth of 78 million . However, Kamath stressed that thriving in this shift depends on constant upskilling, not relying on outdated college credentials .

He pinpointed growth in sectors like agriculture, delivery, care economy, AI, big data, fintech, and green energy, while warning that roles such as clerks, cashiers, and secretaries will steadily decline due to automation . Skills in AI, cybersecurity, analytical thinking, creative problem‑solving, resilience, flexibility, and - above all - lifelong learning will become critical .

Kamath’s warning is clear: Adaptability is your only insurance in the future job market- degrees can't keep up; only learning can.
