Disabled toilets in Bengaluru? More like hidden and broken!

Bengaluru's public sanitation system is failing its disabled residents. A recent RV University survey of 65 public toilets across bus and metro stations, parks, markets, and railway terminals found only 14 had disability‑friendly facilities - and half of these were locked or unusable. Moreover, only one featured Braille signage - yet its placement actually blocked access .
At Majestic bus station, the lone disabled toilet lacks ramps, anti‑skid flooring, handrails, or low-height fixtures - making it inaccessible and hazardous . Compounding the problem, residents report it’s often filthy, smelly, and neglected by cleaning staff .
The city has only 803 public toilets for a population of 1.4 crore - just one facility per 1.7 lakh people - and a significant accessibility gap remains . CAG data also reveals that over 52,000 schools in Karnataka lack special‑needs toilets, with Bengaluru Urban schools particularly lagging.
Despite the central government's Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan ("Accessible India Campaign") launched in 2015, progress in Bengaluru is dismal . Advocates call for stricter audits, better design standards, and consistent maintenance to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities in public spaces.
