In a startling revelation, a Hyderabad couple found that the baby they received through surrogacy had no genetic ties to them. The couple had paid ₹35 lakh to Universal Srushti Fertility Centre, expecting a child biologically theirs. However, a DNA test confirmed otherwise, leading to the exposure of a significant surrogacy scam.
Investigations revealed that the clinic, run by Dr. Athaluri Namratha, had been operating without a valid license since 2021. The clinic allegedly procured infants from financially disadvantaged families, presenting them as surrogate babies to unsuspecting couples. Dr. Namratha, along with nine others, including her son and other clinic staff, have been arrested.
Authorities are now delving deeper to identify other potential victims and ensure justice. This incident underscores the urgent need for stringent regulations and oversight in fertility treatments to protect hopeful parents and vulnerable families alike.
