Do your emotions spiral in the days before your period? You could be experiencing Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) - a severe, often misunderstood condition that goes far beyond PMS. Affecting mood, energy, and daily function, PMDD impacts 3–8% of menstruating individuals.
Unlike PMS, PMDD can bring intense mood swings, depression, anxiety, and even thoughts of self-harm, typically during the luteal phase of your cycle. It’s not caused by a hormone imbalance, but by how your brain reacts to natural hormonal changes.
The good news? PMDD is manageable. Treatments include SSRIs, hormonal contraceptives, lifestyle changes like exercise, a nutrient-rich diet, stress reduction, and therapy. Some find relief through light therapy, yoga, and supplements like magnesium and vitamin B6.
Tracking your cycle and symptoms is key to diagnosis. If this sounds like you, you're not alone - talk to your doctor and take the first step toward feeling like yourself again.
